Step Change Design

Co-owned by Debbie Carroll, with fellow Designer Mark Rendell, Step Change Design was formed specifically to share the findings from a joint research project they undertook into what makes care setting gardens more actively used.

Their work saw them unlock the role of culture and its influence on care homes engagement with the outdoors and led to developing a new way for designers to support care based clients they call ‘Relationship-centred design’.

They produced their findings as a visual tool, The Care Culture Map, to support both the care and design sectors, this is available with an accompanying handbook. They also share their work through workshops and presentations inspiring care settings to help residents, particularly with dementia, to be able to enjoy meaningful engagement outside as and when they choose.
