A lovely evening sharing my experiences as a Garden Designer for the Chilworth Gardening Club, Southampton. A range of plants were shown to highlight some key do’s and don’ts when choosing new plants to sit comfortably alongside existing plants.

Hedgehog fencing

After our winter winds I had to replace some fencing and so have taken the opportunity to add some hedgehog holes. These little gaps in the fence allow a hedgehog to roam between gardens giving them access to a wider area for much needed food and shelter. Next time you change a panel speak to the contractor to add this wildlife friendly touch or do it yourself.

– publications to support care and dementia gardens

Our ‘Why don’t we go into the garden?’ publication was created to support Care Settings in creating actively used gardens. These resources are based on the research I carried out with fellow Garden Designer, Mark Rendell, into why care home gardens, particularly for dementia, were not more actively used even when they met the latest design guidance.

The findings didn’t lead where expected, instead we had to unlock how the care practices, processes and attitudes, its culture, were at influencing engagement outside.

Our aim is to enable residents to enjoy meaningful engagement with the garden as and when they choose. The ‘Care Culture Map and Handbook’, published in 2016, help care settings to understand what is hindering greater engagement, plan a route forward and ensure if a designer is needed that this is appropriate and cost effective and used long after the novelty has worn off.

While our ‘Designer handbook’, published in 2022 to compliment the earlier care focused book, supports those tasked with helping create care environment gardens in line with our findings within a ‘Relationship-Centred Design’ approach.

Royal visit – Prospect Park Hospital 2018

The Duchess of Gloucester opened the refurbished wards and garden of the Oakwood Unit, Prospect Park Hospital. It was lovely to meet her and then to see Patients, families and Staff all gathered in the main garden where she chatted with nearly everyone before cutting a cake and presented the plaque to put on display. The gardens are a space to relax, socialise and also support the physiotherapy work of the ward in patient’s recovery.

Remembrance Garden – Titchfield News 2010

Garden of Remembrance dedicated at St Peter’s Church, Titchfield, Hampshire. This was designed to allow plaques to commemorate loved ones and a seasonal array of planting to lift the spirits. An almond tree provides early season blossom and has references to gardens within the Bible.

This garden was refurbished in 2025 following storm damage from a neighbours wall falling down onto this small garden. This allowed a refresh of the planting to match the needs of the church gardening group who tend it.
