Tool to support Care Settings in creating active gardens

Based on the research I carried out with a colleague into why care gardens, particularly for dementia, were not more actively used even when they met the latest guidance we have created this tool.

Tool to support care settings and designers in creating active care gardens

The findings didn’t lead where expected, into the garden, instead we had to unlock how the practices, processes and attitudes, its culture, were at play. The Care Culture Map and Handbook are designed to help care settings, and designers supporting them, to understand what is hindering greater engagement, plan a route forward and ensure if a designer is needed that this is appropriate and cost effective. The aim is to enable residents in care to enjoy meaningful engagement with the garden as and when they choose.
